It all started with a download.
So a couple of weeks ago I was looking for a new plug-in for a piece called "Dragon's Breath." It's a metal piece with slap bass. I wanted something a little harder for the bass sound than what I was using. I knew about the Darkglass plug-in (from Neural DSP Technologies), but never tried it. The style of music/musician the company caters to isn't really my style. However, I decided to take it for a spin.
I ended up really liking this plug-in and purchased it. During this time the company sent an email about a riff contest they were sponsoring. The contest was up and running for a few weeks and there were already a bunch of submissions. Lots of good sounding clips. Lots of very skilled technical players.
After I received the email I wrote the piece that became "The Invisible Enemy" (I also ended up using the Darkglass plug-in for it, too). For some reason, I wanted to write it on my hybrid fretted/fretless bass. It's a 4-string Ibanez SoundGear bass with 2 fretted low strings and 2 fretless high strings. Opens up a lot of possibilities and provides a way to dig into playing metal while also providing the ability to add that unmistakable fretless sound.
In the short piece above you can hear the fretless parts in the solo section (briefly) and the outro. The fretless is a big part of the outro sound. I'll be writing a separate blog post about my hybrid 4-string fretted/fretless bass soon!
After I wrote the tune, I sent it to Brett and he wrote killer guitars for it. I love the fact that the guitars and bass rarely play anything in unison, even in this short piece. And Brett knows I can be a little "notey" in my playing. His guitar work over the bass heavy outro is just killer! Brett also wrote the keys and mastered it.
If you have any thoughts on the piece or the hybrid bass used, we'd love to hear from you!
